What a joy it is to have a snow day!
As much a joy to adults as to students. Found time! No need to fight one’s way through a difficult commute! Beautiful views out every window!
What can I do to make a small, joyful surprise for library users? We don’t charge fines, so I can’t forgive them. We really do need the books back, so I can’t say, “Just keep them!” And besides, the books really aren’t mine to give away. Perhaps…
- Consult with the principal about alternative satisfaction for lost books –work or contribution to the local Food Pantry?
- Buy pencils marked, “I’m so proud of you,” to give away on suitable occasions?
- Allow a student who pays for a lost book to put a bookplate in a book of his/her choice, “Recommended by Joe Jones?”
- Keep a basket of book review journals on my desk and allow students to initial titles they like? I’d have to have a “no promises” disclaimer…
- Serve hot cocoa before school on New Books day?
Part of it is the joy of the unexpected.
